experience with public auction
Tom handled many of the greatest individual items and collections that came to auction during his 22-years in the field. He catalogued the publisher’s copy of Isaac Newton’s Principia Mathematica that sold at Christie’s New York in December 2016 for $3.7million, a world record for a scientific book. This exceeded the previous record, which Tom also catalogued: the Richard Green copy of Nicholaus Copernicus's De revolutionibus that sold for $2.2 million dollars. Another career highlight was the cataloguing of Abel Buell's 1783 map of the United States that sold for $2.1 million, a world auction record for any printed map. Tom handled numerous important works across the entire history of printed books and manuscripts.

richard wilbur papers
Richard Wilbur (1921-1917) was a leading American poet, translator, critic, and editor of the post-war period. Critically acclaimed, and award-winning, Wilbur won the Pulitzer Prize for poetry as well as the National Book Award, the Bollingen Prize, and many other major awards and prizes. Wilbur began preserving his enormous literary archive with material he saved as an 8 year old boy, and he meticulously archived his work throughout his long life. The result offers astounding insight into a writer’s working methods. Tom was honored to prepare both the estate tax and charitable donation appraisals of this monumental archive that is now at Amherst College.
